Exhausted Morgan Troops Spend Fifth Night in Indiana #20 Sign/Marker, John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail 1863: General Morgan spent the night of July 12, 1863 at the Ferris Schoolhouse. Although now a private residence, it is located on the southeast corner of today's SR 101 and County Road 900 North in Ripley County. His tired troops had traveled some 45 miles that day and camped in the vicinity of the present-day St. Paul Cemetery. Just two miles north in Sunman, 1,800 Union troops were waiting in railroad cars for orders to pursue Morgan's Raiders. At 6 a.m. in the morning of July 13, 1863, Morgan and his men moved out eastward on the Asche Road/County Road 900 toward Dearborn County and ultimately Ohio.
