Morgan Targets Versailles #17 Sign/Marker, John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail 1863 in Indiana: On Sunday morning, July 12, 1863, Morgan's Raiders quickly departed from Dupont, heading eastward. Thomas Stout, a Dupont resident, was forced to go with them and serve as a guide; he was later released to walk back home some 12 miles, as they kept his horse. Morgan's men destroyed crops at farms along the way and took more fresh horses. Along the road in the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, three stragglers, who had stopped for water, were captured by two Union officers home on leave; they were taken to Madison, where they were nearly lynched by an angry crowd. At the location of this Sign/Marker #17, General Morgan divided his troops sending some up the Old Michigan Road, while the main column moved north on the planked Madison Road to Versailles.
