Most of these caves volumetric corresponds to an artificial excavation for the exploration of building materials, especially in the eighteenth century. Apparently, there is here a streak of top quality stone, which was explored, inter alia, for the reconstruction of downtown Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755.

These caves have a series of entries, located along a few hundred meters, which are connect by a network of tunnels and rooms.

When i first came here, in 2005, the place was used by homeless people, and had lot's and lot's of trash on the inside. After that, the city hall, cleaned up the place and some gates where installed to prevent the entrance.
