This area is littered with redundant pot kilns (in fact opposite this pub is a statue of Henry Doulton). Pot kilns were used during the industrial revolution and later to achieve the high temperatures required for the firing of ceramics.

The ceramic would be placed in a protective fireclay container called a saggar. A saggar maker was employed to make the protective container. It is however, a defunct occupation.
