Morgan is Forced to Turn Back, First and Only Time in Indiana - #15 Sign/Marker, John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail 1863 in Indiana: On July 11, 1863, Morgan's Raiders followed the raods northward from Lexington appraoching Vernon. "At Vernon, Morgan demanded the surrender of the town, but was rebuffed. The Home Guard commander responded, that the town was swarming with troops and it was Morgan who should capitulate." No agreement was reached but a message was sent to Morgan asking for a two-hour delay" to evacuate women and children...In the mean time, more Union tropps arrived in North Vernon, raising the total to some 2,000. With this information and the fact Morgan wss already being pursued by a significant number of Union troops, Morgan retreated southeast toward Dupont as darkness fell.
