A Night in a Hotel - Sign/Marker 12, John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail, 1863: This Sign/Marker is located in Lexington, Indiana where General Morgan and his men had arrived about dusk on July 10, 1863. He and his men had ridden some 45 miles since camping overnight in Palmyra the night before. General Morgan had taken Lexington (the county seat of Scott County) without opposition as the county's three homeguard companies had been ordered to Jeffersonville to protect the U.S. Government warehouses. General Morgan and his staff spent the night in the Harris Hotel while the majority of his men camped northest of town. Before leaving Lexington at 11 a.m. on July 11th, Morgan's Raiders looted the town's three general stores of clothing and shoes; they also robbed the post office and plundered local homes.
