Salem Suffers - Sign/Marker 8, John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail 1863 is on the courthouse square in Salem, Indiana. On July 10, 1863 at his headquarters on the southeast side of the courthouse, General Morgan watched the indiscriminate looting of Salem. Berkey's Store on the northeast corner of the square was hard hit with merchandise and souvenirs taken by Morgan's troops. Two flour mills DePauws and Knights were ransomed for $1000 each to keep them from beeing burned. The owner of the Allan Manley and Company Woolen Mill paid a like amount, so that his property was not destroyed. Shortly after noon, General Morgan learned that General H. Hobson's 4000 Union troops had left Corydon in pursuit of his Confederates. Morgan convened a coucil of war and decided to ride east; Morgan and his troops left Salem at 3 p.m. with their loot and other souvenirs.
