The horse Centenial was given to the Queen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1977 to celebrate her 25th year as monarch. The Queen chose to be portrayed riding astride Centenial, rather than the traditional sidesaddle, on the first equestrian statue of the Queen in the world. The monument, by British-Columbia sculptor Jack Harman, was unveiled as part of Canada’s 125th anniversary celebrations. It was unveiled in 1992, the year of the 40th anniversary of her accession to the Throne.
The bronze statue of the Queen and Centenial, approximately 1.5 times life size, are on a granite pedestal measuring approximately 10 feet high by 20 feet long. There is a circular granite base under the pedestal.
The Queen is wearing a cape, riding breaches and boots.
Centenial's right front leg is slightly bent giving the impression of forward movement. The crest of the RCMP can be seen on its breaststrap.
