"The Ohio Asylum for the Blind is an architecturally and historically significant building which stands today as a reminder of the post-Civil War public "building boom." It is a three-story plus mansard-roof structure designed in the Second Empire style. The first state Blind School in the United States opened in Ohio on July 4, 1837. At that time there were only five pupils and one instructor. The state built the first building for the school and occupied it in 1838. This school proved to be a successful venture and soon more and more potential pupils were applying to the state for admittance. Because of overcrowding, this building was built and occupied in 1874. It accommodated 250 pupils and 65 staff members. The blind in the state of Ohio were educated in this facility until the early 1950s. At that time, it was built on the grounds of the Ohio Deaf School. When the Blind School was moved, the Ohio Department of Highway Safety took over the building for needed office space."
