For most episodes of All Gas and Gaiters studio sets were used. However, for the first pilot episode extensive use was made of locations in St Albans.

In the first episode, broadcast as part of the Comedy Playhouse program, the Cathedral of St Oggs has been bequeathed £60,000, a sum that would go a long way for repairs to the cathedral. The bequest is from a former Bishop of St Oggs who was passionate about medieval customs. There is, however, a condition to the bequest. In order to qualify for the bequest the Bishop and his clerk must ride around the see on a white horse on May Day giving forty pairs of white stockings to chaste maidens.

In order to comply with the request a number of obstacles have to be overcome by the Bishop, Archdeacon, and Chaplain Noote. The first of these is easily overcome when Noote is despatched, to his embarrassment, to purchase the forty pairs of stockings. The next problem is finding a white horse. After much searching one is found, however it then becomes apparent that the reluctant Bishop has never ridden a horse. The final problem is much harder to overcome, where to find forty chaste maidens. By late afternoon only one pair has been given, and the Dean reminds the Bishop that the act of charity must be finished by sun down. What to do? Fortunately, at the last minute, a coach load of nuns arrive at the Palace for a visit and solve the Bishop’s problem.

The Bishop and Noote’s progress is followed down Fishpool St. There are two clips along Fishpool St showing the Bishop on the white horse being led by Noote and followed by the Archdeacon in the car.
