The memorial is to eighteen men who were killed during construction of a railroad bridge across the Missouri River. The men were killed when this when this fifteen-foot section of column broke on November 11, 1870. The bridge was completed in May 1871 and was the first bridge spanning the Missouri River. The memorial to this disaster is located in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Charles.
