Long Description:

Sir Titus Salt

Sir Titus Salt was a successful textile mill owner and the biggest employer in Bradford. The city of Bradford had grown rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. It was heavily polluted from the coal fired mills, had extremely poor housing and one of the lowest life expectancies in the U.K.

Salt took a radical approach and decided that it should be possible to treat workers well and still make a profit.

He built a large new mill on the outskirts of Bradford on a Greenfield site and then built a complete model village for his workers. The village had houses with gardens, a library, a hospital, bath houses, church, public park and sports grounds.

The memorial was erected in his honour and on top of the canopy are allegorical statues of 4 of the Seven Heavenly Virtues. They were placed there to allude to his virtues in the way he conducted his life and business. It is an English Heritage Grade II Listed Building reference number 1057706.
