The station originally opened in 1844 and was one of the largest in the UK. It central location in the Midlands meant it was ideally situated for a station on the long distance routes connecting the North East of Scotland with the South Coast of England via London.
The station also serves more local routes to Birmingham, Cardiff and Stoke-On-Trent.
It was unusual because the station was shared by more than one railway company. The nearby Midland Hotel was the first railway hotel to be built outside London.
These days it is owned by Network Rail and managed by East Midlands Trains, the station is also used by CrossCountry services and oneNorthern Rail service.
In 2007 extensive remodelling took place, with a new entrance near to the nearby professional Football club of Derby County. The entrance has a lift access and overhead walkways to all the platforms and the main entrance. The new entrance shows the modern station name of Derby rather than Derby Midland.
