1n 1900, New Yorkers I.H.Goodwin of New York City and J.S.Baker of Peekskill launched Richmond's first modern industry, manufacturing women's and children's muslin undergarments. The first establishment in town to be powered by electricity, the Richmond Underwear Factory employed more than 100 workers inside a two-story 150' by 52' facility, making thousands of garments a day for wholesale distribution.
Now known as the Goodwin Baker Building, it houses several offices. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
