Standing over five stories tall, this memorial to Iwo Jima is stunning. Located on a city block corner in downtown Long Prairie Minnesota, it is the centerpiece of Veteran's Park.
The Iwo Jima memorial features the five story mural and it is topped by a steel silhouette of the famous flag raising photo on Mt. Surabichi at Iwo Jima. The mural has large real boulders at the base, the artwork is realistic and is life like to Iwo Jima. The artwork was done by Army Reservist Kimberly Lawler The mural scenes were selected to personify the savagery and tremendous sacrifice that all war brings. 28,000 American lives were lost during the Battle of Iwo Jima alone..
The memorial does have a website that shows in progress photos of the creation of the memorial and mural.
