There I was, a still wet behind the ears Pennsylvania farm boy in south Mississippi. After the obligatory KP and detail time, I was assigned to Radio Relay school. One my first day of training, I was red lined and put in AFI (Awaiting Further Instructions) status for several weeks. I was then assigned to AC&W school and actually got to go to it. The best part of that was the field site training. No more marching to and from class. We were bussed to and from Thrower Park each day and I was made a shift rope (student leader) which got me out of all details for the remainder of my initial training time at KAFB.
