This Obelisk stands tall at the top of the hill in Great Lines Heritage Park. It was built by the Commonwealth War Commissions, originally to remember the service men and women from the Royal Navy who lost their lives, mostly at sea, and have no graves. This was officially unveiled on 26 April 1924 to remember those 8,517 sailors of the First World War who have no grave.
The area was expanded after the second world war to include those who were lost at sea in the this war, and again have no graves.
Around the enclose, and on the base of the obelisk are the names of the 18,617 persons who this obelisk represents. Full details can be seen from the web link below.
The area is open to the public every day from 8am to 5pm
Identical obelisks memorials are situated at Portsmouth and Plymouth.
Access to the park can be by parking on the main road and entering the park at N51 23.364 E000 32.481 or for a shorter walk, free parking and access is near N51 23.235 E000 32.299
If entering from the main road just keep walking ahead on the wheelchair friendly path. If coming from the second option follow the path ahead and turn right at the first junction of paths.
