The "Manitoba Insane Asylum" opened on this site in May 25, 1886. That original building was demolished in 1978. Various name changes reflect the changes in attitude, philosophy and function and mark the course of progress in the care and treatment of the mentally ill.
Manitoba Insane Asylum (1886), Selkirk Insane Hospital (1910), Selkirk Hospital for Mental Diseases (1919) and Selkirk Mental Health Centre (1973).
