The Greek theatre is an outdoor theatre located in Montjuic mountain in Barcelona. The outdoor theatre was designed by the architects Reventós and Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí in a former quarry of the mountain on which the stone wall serves as stage. It was built for the International Exposition of Barcelona in 1929. The first show which inaugurated the place was “Electra of Sophocles” by Margarita Xirgu in 1932.
The theatre welcomes around 1.900 spectators on its surface of 460 m2. In 1976 the council opened the first Festival Grec (Greek Festival). It has since been held every year except in 1979.
Currently its use is limited almost exclusively to this festival in the summer when you can enjoy theater, dance and concerts.
