Located at the Garry Miller Memorial Park on the Putty Road, Milbrodale NSW, it honors all the truck drivers who lost their lives on that icon road when it was the major route north, it also honors those that used the road and have since passed away.
The Memorial has been erected by a small group of guys doing something for the trucking brotherhood. Having traversed this road themselves, they wanted to honor those who have since passed.
Memorial Text is a poem:
There's another place of interest
I'd like to talk about
It's the Putty Road from Singleton
To Windsor in the south
It's a hundred miles between those towns
Of dangerous winding road
It's the home of the overnighter
And the bloke with the heavy load
On every post and bridge rail
The scars tell a tale of woe
Some happened only yesterday
Some happenened long ago
A place of narrow cuttings
And tight and dangerous bends
So take it easy on the corners
And you'll see the other end
It's claimed a lot of lives too
This winding Putty Road
And smashed a lot of beautiful trucks
And ruined many a load
Be it Kenworth, Mack or Volvo
The makes too numerous to name
When their wheels are up in the air, old mate
They all look the bloody same
We've got a mate called Colo
Who thinks the truckies are OK
He's open 24 hours
So drop in if you're down that way
He'll cook you anything you want
And the meals are always tops
And if you've got the nerve to say they're not
He hands out "Karate" chops
He's got all our photo's on the wall
And all our names are there too
He'll listen to all your stories mate
Whether fairy tale or true
When I was a young bloke
First starting on the road
'I dreamt of driving a big one
Down the winding Putty Road
It's a nightmare for the caravanner
Where many have met their doom
I wish they'd stay on the coast road
And give us a bit of room
The highway goes through Branxton
Then to Newcastle on the sea
But even if the guide posts were bottles of Fourex
It's still the Putty Road for me
- John "The Ferret" Moran circa 1974
