The US Mint creates the coins and bills used as currency for the United States. When gold was discovered in North Carolina, seven branches of the US Mint were authorized within the state. This mint in Charlotte was authorized to create gold coins. from 1837 through 1961, until it closed due to the Civil War. It reopened again in 1867 and operated until closing in 1913. In 1933, the building housing the mint was torn down and relocated a few miles away to be used as a museum.

Stood a few feet southwest. Operated 1837-61, 1867-1913. Razed, 1933, and rebuilt as art museum three miles east.
