"The vegetation of the Quinta Das Lágrimas consists of a arboretum which can be split into two distinct parts: the woods of the hillside and garden area next to the palace. The first of these areas is formed by a dense forest, the second being characterized by a more sparse vegetation on the ground and is dominated by exotic species of large size and rarity.

Leaving the side of the chapel we enter the so-called historic garden. On the left, bending their branches over the Palace, is perhaps the rarest tree in the Quinta das Lágrimas, a majestic podocarpo (Afrocarpus falcata), originating in South Africa, of which there is just one more example in Portugal. Along with this species are a fir (Abies alba) and an incense or pitósporo (Pittosporum undulatum). A little farther on is a grown-Loda bastard (Celtis australis) and immediately afterwards comes a grove of Chinese bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides) surrounding a palm-of-the-canary (Phoenix canariensis), one of five species of palm trees found in Thursday."
