Oklahoma City Zoo 1902-1959 is a book by Amy Dee Stephens that details the zoo's humble beginnings at Wheeler Park with one deer to 1959 when it included many animals the public had never seen before.
The book is divided into chapters that separate the timeline by decades. The early years of the zoo include the donation of one single deer that was a huge hit with visitors.
It is wonderful to see the hundreds of photos that show the zoo in its original location with guests swimming in the lake and the absolutely beautiful gardens set up at Wheeler Park. The lake is no longer open to public swimming, but at the time this was a popular recreation spot for visitors to the Oklahoma City area.
The OKC Zoo has had many newsworthy events, some of which are the escape of Leapy the Leopard (which made news around the world), school children donating pennies to purchase Judy the Elephant, saving Barbecue Bear, and 10 year old Gayla Peevey becoming a huge success with her song "I want a hippoptamus for Christmas!"
The photos and accompanying narrative in the book are a great way to learn about the beginnings of one of Oklahoma City's most popular attractions.
