This station, a chiseled square set by the U.S. Geological Survey, is located in Andover, NH, on the Northern Rail Trail, formerly the Northern Railroad, later the Northern branch of the Boston & Maine Railroad. It is just north of the site of the former East Andover train station, also known as Halcyon Station, which no longer exists. The mark is in the west end of a stone block retaining wall at the south side of the trail, 100-ft west from a road overpass bridge (Valley Road). The NGS description is as follows:
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1933
0.8 MI E FROM HALYCON.
0.8 MILE EAST ALONG THE BOSTON AND MAINE RAILROAD FROM THE
STATION AT HALYCON, MERRIMAC COUNTY, 200 FEET SOUTH OF CULVERT
NO. 97.32, 100 FEET WEST OF OVERHEAD BRIDGE NO. 97.26, 10 FEET
SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE TRACK, ON THE TOP OF THE WEST
END OF THE RETAINING WALL, AND ABOUT 1 FOOT ABOVE THE BASE OF
THE RAIL. A CHISELED SQUARE.
The mark actually appears to be 200 feet east northeast from culvert 97.32, but I used the '100 feet west from bridge 97.26' reference anyway. The square was painted white during a previous visit, which was a big help because the stone was covered in moss.
