John Knowles of Hoyland Nether purchased some land in 1880 1884. After his death in 1899 the land passed to his brother The Rev. Francis Knowles who in turn sold it to his married sister Elizabeth Bartlett. Elizabeth gave permission for a church and school to be built on the land off Hoyland High Street at her own expense and had the church named after her dead brother. In 1912 Elizabeth conveyed all the property to The Free Church of England.
There is a foundation stone on the front right hand side of the building low down and in rather poor condition. It reads -
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD
THIS STONE WAS LAID
BY THE
RT Rev. WM TROUGHTON
BISHOP PRIMUS OF THE
FREE CHURCH OF ENGLAND
????? 1911."
The church was consecrated on the 29th June 1912 by The Rt. Rev. William Troughton.

There are two interesting web sites relating to the church-
