Garrett Coliseum is supported by 22 enormous steel-reinforced A-frames which hold up the concrete slab roof that is up to five inches thick.
The Coliseum was, for many years, the largest enclosed arena in the United States and visitors from around the country would come to Montgomery just to look at it.
Garrett Coliseum is an 13,500-seat multi-purpose arena. The coliseum is home to the Alabama National Fair held every autumn. It was built in 1951 and named after W.W. Garrett, the first chairman of the Alabama Agricultural Board. The coliseum's first event was a concert by Hank Williams. The coliseum was home to the Montgomery Bears of the American Indoor Football Association from 2005 to 2007.
The coliseum is also home to the Southeastern Livestock Exposition Rodeo every spring as well as venue to concerts, social events, expositions, trade shows, sports events, horse and cattle shows and sales and the circus.
