'Sands of time: Britain's oldest public beach hut is recognised after 102 years of keeping the rain off

25th February 2011

It has been sheltering beach goers from the traditional British summer weather for 102 years.

And now the country's oldest public beach hut's century of service is being recognised.

Tourism officials today unveiled a commemorative blue plaque on the wooded hut that was built on the Bournemouth seafront in 1909.

The 7ftx7ft hut 2359 is still hired out to tourists in the Dorset resort today.

Andrew Emery, of Bournemouth Council's tourism department, said: 'Bits of plastic have been added to it over the years but the structure is substantially original.

'It is an important hut and was the first municipal beach hut in the UK.

'Beach huts are a British institution - we have more than any other country in the world.

'Bournemouth has 1,900 beach huts and the idea of the plaque is to celebrate the fact we are the home of the beach hut.'

The plaque is due to be unveiled today by local resident Jean Smith, who has owned her own beach hut at Bournemouth for more than 20 years.

Beach huts were developed from the Victorian bathing machines - four-wheeled carriages that were towed to the beachfront - designed to protect the modesty of bathers at the seaside.

By the 1920s the modern beach hut had established itself as an essential part of the seaside holiday.

There are more than 20,000 beach huts along the British coastline.

In Bournemouth, 1,300 out of the 1,900 huts are privately owned and there is five year waiting list for one.

The council rents out its beach huts at £12 a day, £55 pounds a week and £1,375 a year.'
