The stadium is owned by the State of Rio de Janeiro. The stadium was built for the 1950s World Cup.
The stadium will also be used as a venue for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
The stadium is also home a football museum. In the past many special events have taken place at the stadium, including a mass with Pope John Paul II and cocnerts by Kiss and Backstreet Boys.
