The confluence of Soda Butte Creek with the Lamar River is adjacent to the Northeast Entrance Road about 16 miles easterly from Tower Junction. Both the Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek are well known for fishing and the Lamar Valley is well known for wildlife viewing. At the confluence, the Lamar River has a broad braided stream bed with multiple shifting low-water channels
Soda Butte Creek begins near Cooke City, Montana some 18 miles to the northeast and has a total length of about 20 miles. The creek is named for Soda Butte, an extinct hot springs cone about 2 miles upstream from here.
The Lamar River begins on the north side of Lamar Mountain some 21 miles to the southeast and joins the Yellowstone River some 11 miles west-northwest of here, near Tower Junction. The total length of the river is about 40 miles and it is entirely within Yellowstone National Park. The river was named for L.Q.C. Lamar (Secretary of the Interior from March 1885 to January 1888) by Arnold Hague (geologist on the 1884-85 Geological Survey of Yellowstone Park).
