This is a Majestic female figure and a symbolic representation of Art.
Its attributes include brushes, tricks and chisel in his left hand, and torso on the right hand, alluding to painting and sculpture. It is a large Lioz Limestone (Lioz is a rare limestone found in Portugal and used in decorative works) sculpture of a academic language, (along with another sculpture symbolizing science), placed on the main staircase to access the Carlos Lopes Pavilion. The pavilion created for the Exhibition Commemorating the Centenary of the Independence of Brazil, was inaugurated in 1923 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and later reassembled in Lisbon between the years 1929 and 1932, and reopened for the Great Exhibition of the Portuguese Industry that same year.
Later (probably in 1945), the two sculptures were placed on the access stairway.
