In Boston's Back Bay section, there is a bridge that carries Boylston Street over the Massachusetts Turnpike. This bridge has a plaque on it stating that this bridge is dedicated to James. B. O'Leary.
The plaque has the following text on it:
" - * -
Patrolman James B. O'Leary Bridge
in memory of
James B. O'Leary
A member of the Boston Police Department
Killed in the Line of Duty
August 1, 1963"
The bridge is next to an old police station, Division 16, which is now Dillon's Restaurant and Bar.
One web site that had relayed a transcript of an appeal case related to the incident stated that on August 1, 1963, two people were involved in robbing a store on Boylston Street, one in the store, and one waiting in a car. The one in the store was pursued by O'Leary (I interpret the text to have been all on foot). When the robber got into the car, near Commonwealth Avenue, O'Leary came to the car and demanded that they get out of the car. The robber ended up shooting and killing O'Leary.
The plaque is on the north and east side end of the bridge.
