After Belgium became independent in 1830 new borders were formed between the Netherlands and Belgium. At august 8, 1843 at the convection of Maastricht the borderlines were officially marked. Landmarks were placed at the whole borderline, 388 (numbered) posts made of cast iron and 356 freestone boundary posts. Initially one could see with the naked eye from one post to another (of course back in 1843 there were fewer buildings). Some posts are only a few meters from each other, the maximum length between two posts is 4 kilometers.
