Furious protestors have been left devastated as controversial plans to build the biggest windfarm in Wales near Aberystwyth could now be pushed through by a new Bristol-based commission designed to fast-track major planning applications and save millions of pounds.
The Infrastructure Planning Commission was set up on 1 October and will approve all major planning applications submitted in England and Wales after 1 March 2010 – including all windfarm applications with an output of over 50 megawatts – in the hope of reducing decision-making time by up to six years and saving around £30m.
The IPC has now named Airtricity as one of the first major encompanies it expects to receive an application from in Spring 2010, as they put forward a proposal to build up to 80 wind turbines with an estimated output of between 140 to 170 megawatts near the Nant-y-Moch resevior.
