Hull Timber Slide

The information on the plaque related to this National Historic Event is as follows, but due to construction on Victoria Island, the plaque is not accessible as this time:

“To avoid the treacherous Chaudière Falls, the firm of Philemon Wright and Sons built a timber slide in 1829 along the Ottawa River's north shore near the waterfall known as the Little Kettle. This inclined wooden bypass channel, the first in Canada wide enough for the passage of an entire "crib" of square timber, revolutionized the trade by preventing costly delays and reducing the dangers faced by the raftsmen. The Hull slide and others like it intensified the exploitation of the rich forests of the Ottawa Valley and helped establish the region as an important centre of the Canadian timber industry.”

It is difficult to see where the slide once stood as there is very little evidence of it anywhere.

An article on the web titled: “History and Architecture of the Chaudiére Falls" relates the following:

“Ruggles Wright built his crib slide alongside what is now Laurier Avenue. It was the first timber slide in the country capable of passing full cribs. The west-most part of it, 30 feet across and fifteen feet deep, was excavated through solid rock until is connected with a natural channel that existed between Philemon Island and Hull.

According to my observations, the best spots from which to see where the slide passed is by going on the bike path under the Portage bridge. Other locations are the public park just west of the Eddy Paper Mill and/or Victoria Island behind the Carbide Mill. However, and from this last spot on Victoria Island, the bay from where the slide exited has been filled in with rock and logging debris.”
