ARA Rhein is located north of Pratteln near the river Rhine. It opened in 1975 and was substantially extended in 1990. The facility is a stock corporation owned by local municipalities and several industrial companies.

It processes the wastewater of the municipalities Augst, Kaiseraugs, Pratteln, Arisdorf, Giebenach and Olsberg, as well as from the industrial zone Schweizerhalle, where mainly chemical and pharmaceutical companies are based.

Apart from the standard equipment this facility has also some large sludge incinerators where the dried sludge is burned at 850 degrees centigrade. It also takes sludge from several other wastewater treatment facilities in the area.
