In the West Hartford veterans memorial plaza there is a bell from the SS Maiden Creek. It is the focal point of a memorial to the fallen members of the United States Merchant Marine.
The SS Maiden Creek was torpedoed by the German submarine U-371 on March 17, 1944 about 30 miles north of Bougie, Algeria. She had merchant crew of 45 and naval armed guard of 29. Eleven men were lost.
