With a population of 348,721 Nice is the fifth largest city in France along the Mediterranean coast.
"The area of today’s Nice is believed to be among the oldest human settlements in Europe. One of the archaeological sites, Terra Amata, displays evidence of a very early use of fire. Around 350 BC, Greeks of Marseille founded a permanent settlement and called it Nikaia, after Nike, the goddess of victory. "

The city does their best to improve safety with the use of lifeguards who monitor the swiming conditions from a wind, wave and water quality standpoint. Flags placed at the stations along the beach help those that have taken time to look at the signs and recall what they have learned a great understanding of how their day might be in the sun and water.
