The Lions that guard the south, Arch Street, entrance to City Hall have an interesting provenance. They were once located on the Phoenix Bank Building on Main Street in Hartford. They appear in photographs of the original building on the roof line of one-storey wings that flanking the central building. When two new buildings were constructed, photographs show that they were placed at ground level. When the last bank building was razed the lions were relocated to their present site. It is believed that these lions are the oldest sculptures in Hartford.
Two male lions flank the south staircase entrance to City Hall. Each limestone lion is 2.5' by 1.5' by 3' and lie on a 2' by 3.5' by 2" limestone base. ft. The lions have their back paws tucked under their bodies and their front paws are arranged parallel to each other and in front of body. Their fully-maned heads are lifted and they are looking forward with their mouths barely open.
