The first fish hatchery in the western hemisphere. Plan to visit? The address is 16 North St, Caledonia, NY. The American Guide series book for Rochester and Monroe County makes the claim that it is the first in the world (p 68)

The hatchery was first started in 1864 by the father of fish culture, Seth Green. In 1870 Caledonia was acquired by New York State.

While the historical marker (see photo) only claims it as the first New York state fish hatchery (the state bought the hatchery in 1870, according to Caledonia Mumford website (visit link) ), the same website claims that it is also the first hatchery in the Western Hemisphere. Look up Seth Green in Wikipedia and Freebase, and you will find the same claim (wiki says first in the United States, and then first in the Western Hemisphere two paragraphs later).

Wiki not a reliable source? How about the New York State Department of Environmentatl Conservation (DEC)? The same claim is made on a listing of NYS fish hatcheries. Look at the Caledonia listing (third in this alphabetical list): (visit link)
