This 1.25 mile hike is a quick jaunt between Carney Lake and Koeneman Lake. There is only minor elevation change, mainly noticed on the hike up out of the swamp on the return trip.

Kitsap County’s Koeneman Lake (formerly called Fern Lake) is located about 3 miles S.E. of Belfair. It covers 19 surface acres, reaches depths of about 25 feet and lies at 210 feet of elevation. Fish species include largemouth bass and rainbow trout. It is open to fishing from the last Saturday in April through October 31st. It is now listed as a “Selective gear, Catch-and-release” lake. It can be reached via a hiking trail (about 1 mile) with the trail head located across the road from Carney Lake.

Parking is across the street from the trailhead at Carney Lake. Please note that a Discover Pass is required to park there.

The trail can be muddy in many places, especially where it parallels the swamp between 0.5 miles and the Rocky Creek footbridge.

Be cautious of the crossing of the lake outlet at Rocky Creek about the mile mile mark. The one time foot bridge has collapsed and twisted. It is cross-able but is very slick when wet.
