Constructed in 1782, this is the only original California Mission church still standing in which Father Serra is known to have celebrated the sacraments. The chapel was restored in the early 1920's and this included the installation of an elaborate retablo (altar piece) of carved wood and gold leaf, which was originally from Barcelona, Spain. A small side chapel is dedicated to Saint Peregrine. Three padres who oversaw the Mission are buried in the floor of the chapel.
The chapel is open to visit during regular hours at Mission San Juan Capistrano. A small admission fee is charged to visit the Mission grounds.
