This 1692 marble sculpture by Lorenzo Ottone (1648-1736) is entitled "Le Nil". There are many sculptures in France with representations of important rivers...and this work celebrates Egypt's Nile. It depicts a middle-aged bearded man laying down...apparently in a stream. A male-faced sphinx with a Pharoah's headdress seems to serve the man as a pillow...and a cornucopia is resting on it. Small cherubs are crawling over the figure...including one which seems to be wresting a crocodile.
