Andrew Jackson McGonnigle was born March 4, 1829 and served as a Union Officer during the Civil War. He was serving as a Captain on October 19, 1864 when he distinguished himself at the Battle of Cedar Creek near Middletown, Virginia. This battle was the decisive engagement of General Phillip Sheridan’s Valley Campaign and was the largest battle fought in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. For his actions during the Battle of Cedar Creek Captain McGonnigle was awarded the Medal of Honor. He retired from military service with the rank of Brigadier General. General MCGonnigle died on January 25, 1901 and is resting in Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, North Carolina. General McGonnigle’s Medal of Honor citation reads:
” While acting chief quartermaster of Gen. Sheridan's forces operating in the Shenandoah Valley was severely wounded while voluntarily leading a brigade of infantry and was commended for the greatest gallantry by Gen. Sheridan.
