The chimney started life in 1917 but was added to in later years to reach a final height of 200'. The stack was part of coal burning plant that was owned by Penelec. After Penelec sold off the property the building was torn down leaving only the stack to remind us the plant had been there.
The current owner of the chimney Scott Enterprises says the the structure is in good shape and at this time it would be cost prohibitive to try removing it just for the sake of taking it down.
Several ideas have been tossed around on what to do with the structure including something as simple as painting it to as extravagant as making it part of some other building like a hotel. By far the best idea so far would be to turn the former chimney into a decorative lighthouse so that it would fit in with the Erie Maritime Museum that is located just across the street.
No matter what they do with it this 94 year old chimney has seen a long life and caught the eye and imagination of many a local citizen and tourist alike.
Parking is available on the west side of the Blsco Library, and many other waymarks can be found in the area.
