Pioneer Cemetery

The earliest white settlers of the Lewis County region of Tennessee are buried at this site. Also buried at this site is Merriweather Lewis, famous explorer of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The location he died at, Grinder's Stand, is a short distance away.

There are approximately 120 grave markers, including Meriweather Lewis' monument. The original gravestones have been replaced with square stones that are set level with the ground, making it easier for the park service to maintain the grounds. This, however, makes them more difficult to see. You'll have to walk around the site (and remove leaves depending on the time of year) to find all the stones.

The cemetery is part of the Historic Natchez Trace trails, in the park dedicated to Lewis, the most famous person in the cemetery (and the county's namesake).
