The Klukwan Tlingit people were the first to see the spectacle of eagles here at the Council Grounds. The eagles showed them the way to this rich land of abundant salmon, and the eagle remains a major icon of their culture. As other people moved into the area, the eagles went through an era of persecution. Many were shot for the bounty placed on them. Some felt eagles should be protected while others feared this protection would mean loss of jobs and economic opportunity. A feeding frenzy occurs here in late fall and early winter. Bald eagles congregate by the thousands to feed on a late run of chum salmon. This opportunity is the last of the year for eagles to add precious fat they need to survive the upcoming winter To receive credits for this cache do one of the following: Post a picture of you or group holding your GPS between the two information boards (Preserving the largest concentration of Bald Eagles anywhere in the world and Get the Picture) located at Ground Zero.
