Eglise Saint-Jean
L'église Saint-Jean de Caen n'est pas une église banale. Au XIIe siècle, un édifice, dont on connaît peu de choses, a succédé à une église romane. Très endommagée pendant la guerre de Cent Ans, notamment par les troupes du terrible Henri V en 1417, le bâtiment a été reconstruit au XVe siècle (portail, clocher-porche et nef) et au XVIe (abside et chœur)
Pendant la Révolution, l'église devient dépôt de salpêtre. Elle est rendue au culte en 1802. En 1944, les bombes anglaises l'endommagent, mais pas d'une manière irrémédiable. Elle émerge, avec son clocher et sa tour-lanterne au milieu d'un champ de ruines. Les travaux de consolidation et de restauration ne s'achèveront qu'à Noël 1964.
Points singuliers : le sanctuaire est bâti sur un sol instable dû à un sous-sol marécageux ; le clocher-porche est penché et l'église n'a en fait jamais été terminée. Au niveau du style architectural, le gothique flamboyant de l'extérieur trouve son répondant dans la magnifique dentelle de pierre intérieure, tant au niveau du triforium que de la tour-lanterne.

Church of Saint-Jean
The church Saint-Jean of Caen is not a banal church. In the XIIth century, a building, few things of which we know, succeeded a Romanic church. Very damaged during the One Hundred Years old War, in particular by the troops of the terrible Henri V in 1417, the building was reconstructed in the XVth century (gate, bell tower-hall and nave) and in the XVIth (apse and chorus)
During the Revolution, the church becomes saltpetre deposit. It is returned to the worship in 1802. In 1944, the English bombs damage it, but not in a irreparable way. It appears, with its bell tower and its tower-lantern in the middle of a field of ruins. The works of consolidation and restoration will end only in Christmas 1964.
Singular points: the sanctuary is built on an unstable ground due to a swampy basement; the bell tower-hall is tilted and the church was ended in fact never. At the level of the architectural style, the Flamboyant Gothic from the outside finds his referee in the magnificent lace of internal stone, as well on the level of the triforium as of the turn-lantern.
