"A Filha do Rei Guardando Patos" or "A Guardadora de Patos"(The Daughter of the King guarding Ducks or simply, the Duck keeper)is a figure of a female guarding ducks is represented with the right foot forward and slightly reclined posture. She holds a bouquet of flowers with his left hand while with his right hand she´s feeding four ducks next to them. The plinth represents the vegetation. This sculpture was first exposed in the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon in 1914 in a small size version of marble. Later, possibly in 1917, it was remade with Lioz Limestone (A rare type of limestone found in Portugal near Sintra and used for ornamental purposes), enlarged to life size and placed in one of the lakes in the Jardim da Estrela, where we can found it now. The theme for this sculpture came from a fairy tale that the poet Eugenio de Castro adapted to poetry and the sculptor to transposed into the stone in all its movement and naturalism, offering us a portrait of his daughter Emily.
Sculpture of decorative and unpretentious character, denotes the influence of Parisian Art Nouveau at the level of vegetal and curvilinear elements.
