Eglise Saint-Etienne, dite "Abbaye-aux-Hommes"
L'Abbaye-aux-Hommes de Caen a été fondée par Guillaume le Bâtard (futur Guillaume le Conquérant) en 1059, tandis que sa jeune épouse, Mathilde de Flandre, fondait l'Abbaye-aux-Dames à l'Est de la ville. Avec ces deux monastères, le duc de Normandie voulait se faire pardonner par le pape le fait d'avoir épousé sa cousine en violation des interdits de l'Eglise relatifs aux mariages consanguins.
Les travaux commencèrent en 1063 et allèrent bon train de par la volonté du duc-roi, de l'énergie de Lanfanc (théologien et archevêque de Cantorbery en 1070), mais certainement aussi grâce aux biens glanés en Angleterre à la faveur de la conquête normande. L'édifice est consacré en 1077. Les siècles postérieurs apporteront leur lot de travaux et de modifications (XIIIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles). Il n'en reste pas moins que l'église Saint-Etienne reste un chef-d'œuvre de l'art roman. Dépouillement et simplicité s'allient pour mettre en lumière l'harmonie des proportions et l'équilibre des volumes.
Les bâtiments conventuels de l' Abbaye-aux-Hommes (reconstruits au XVIIIe siècle) abritent l'Hôtel de ville de Caen.

Church of Saint-Etienne "Abbey to the Men"
The Abbaye-aux-Hommes of Caen was established by William the Bastard ( future William the Conqueror ) in 1059, whereas his young wife, Mathilde de Flandre, established the Abbaye-aux-Dames east of the city. With these two monasteries, the duke of Normandy wanted be forgiven by the pope the fact of having married his cousin in violation of the prohibitions of the Church relative to the consanguine marriages.
The works began in 1063 and made good progress(were rife) due to the will of duke-king, energy of Lanfanc (theologian and archbishop of Cantorbery in 1070), but certainly also thanks to the properties(goods) gleaned in England thanks to the Norman conquest. The building is dedicated in 1077. The posterior centuries will bring their lot of works and modifications (XIIIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries). Nevertheless the church Saint-Etienne remains a masterpiece of the Romanesque art. Perusal and simplicity become allied to bring to light the harmony of the dimensions and the balance of the volumes.
The conventual buildings of the Abbaye-aux-Hommes (reconstructed in the XVIIIth century) shelter the City hall of Caen.
