This station, a copper nail bearing the inscription -U.S.G.S. B.M.- in it's head, is located in New Milford, CT, just north of the Brookfield/New Milford town line, on the east side of U.S. Route 7 & 202, at the entrance of the Gallows Hill Cemetery, set in a stone at the west side of the iron gate. The NGS (1984) datasheet description is as follows:
2.4 KM (1.5 MI) NORTH ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 7 FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE
HIGHWAY 25 IN BROOKFIELD TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT, AT THE SOUTH SIDE
OF THE LOWER STONE AT THE ENTRANCE TO GALLOW HILLS CEMETERY, AT THE
JUNCTION OF ALDRICH ROAD, ALSO 7.2 KM (4.5 MI) SOUTH ALONG HIGHWAY 7
FROM THE JUNCTION OF PICKETT DISTRICT ROAD IN NEW MILFORD, 17.68
METERS (58.0 FT) EAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE HIGHWAY, 14.32 METERS
(47.0 FT) SOUTH OF THE CENTER OF ALDRICH ROAD, 1.64 METERS (5.4 FT)
NORTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST 10 BY 10 CM (4 BY 4 IN) WOODEN LEG OF A
SIGN (GALLOW HILLS CEMETERY). NOTE--MARK IS A STANDARD USGS COPPER
NAIL WITH WASHER STAMPED U.S.G.S. BM.
THE MARK IS 0.35 METERS NE FROM A WITNESS POST.
THE MARK IS 0.18 M ABOVE HIGHWAY.
The wooden sign, as described, is gone, but the witness post is still in place. U.S. Route 7 has been re-routed around the Brookfield business district. In spite of this, the directions from the CT Route 25 junction are still good, just bear in mind that U.S. Route 7 is now U.S. Route 202 at that junction.
